Tom Heaton signs one-year extension to remain Manchester United's third-choice goalkeeper
Manchester United have confirmed a new one-year contract for 40-year-old goalkeeper Tom Heaton, keeping the academy graduate at Old Trafford for a sixth season in his second spell at the club.
Tom Heaton has signed a one-year contract extension at Manchester United, the club confirmed, keeping the 40-year-old at Old Trafford for a sixth season in his second stint. The former England international, who rejoined on a free transfer in the summer of 2020, will again serve as third-choice goalkeeper.
Heaton’s last competitive appearance for the club came in February 2023, but director of football Jason Wilcox made clear his value extends well beyond matchdays. “We are delighted that Tom is continuing for another year,” Wilcox said. “Everyone is well aware of the importance of his leadership and professionalism within the group. Tom has played a key role in helping to support Senne throughout his first season in the Premier League; his constant dedication and mentality set a fantastic standard for our goalkeeping group.”
The Senne in question is Senne Lammens, the 23-year-old who joined from Royal Antwerp last summer and has established himself as United’s new first-choice goalkeeper. Heaton’s mentoring role alongside the Belgian has been cited as a significant factor in the club’s decision to retain him.
The goalkeeper situation at United is otherwise in flux. Andre Onana has been placed on the transfer list following his return from a loan spell at Trabzonspor, while Altay Bayindir is expected to return to Turkey, leaving Heaton as the experienced presence behind Lammens in the pecking order.
A United academy graduate who has worked under six different managers since returning to the club under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Heaton expressed confidence in the direction the club is heading under Michael Carrick. “It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United,” he said. “You can feel the determination and ambition of everyone throughout the club to keep pushing for success. I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours.”
