Tielemans takes No. 18 shirt as Rashford's Barcelona return fades further
Manchester United have completed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, their third addition in a week, as the Belgian midfielder inherits the iconic No. 18 shirt. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford's hopes of a permanent Barcelona move have dimmed after fresh reports from Spain.
Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, making the Belgian midfielder the club’s third first-team arrival in the space of a week under manager Michael Carrick. Tielemans joins Andrey Santos and goalkeeper Karl Darlow in what amounts to a rapid acceleration of United’s previously quiet summer window.
Tielemans has been handed the No. 18 shirt — a number that carries significant weight at Old Trafford, having been worn by Paul Scholes, Bruno Fernandes, and most recently Casemiro. The Belgian, signed for his Premier League pedigree and deep-lying playmaking ability, acknowledged the weight of expectation in his first words as a United player.
“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United,” Tielemans said. “Signing for such a special club feels incredible — it is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football. I have had the privilege of experiencing success in the game and it has only increased my determination to achieve more.”
While United’s incomings have gathered pace, the situation surrounding Marcus Rashford remains unresolved. The forward spent last season on loan at Barcelona, but the Spanish club declined to trigger the £26 million buyout clause in the agreement, leaving him without a clear destination.
Any lingering hope of a return to the Camp Nou has been further complicated by Barcelona’s summer business. The Catalan club have already secured Anthony Gordon from Newcastle in a £70 million deal and are reportedly close to signing Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund — both wide forwards who occupy Rashford’s position.
The one scenario that could revive Barcelona’s interest — the departure of Ferran Torres — now looks unlikely to be resolved before September, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo. FFP constraints are said to be behind the delay, meaning Torres will either sign a new contract, closing the door on Rashford entirely, or depart late in the window, by which point the 27-year-old’s options elsewhere may already be exhausted.
United are expected to make further signings before the window closes, but Rashford’s future remains one of the more pressing issues Carrick’s backroom staff will need to address.
