Ferdinand urges Manchester United to stand firm as 15-year-old Gabriel demands exit

Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United to hold their nerve over JJ Gabriel after the 15-year-old informed the club he wants to leave, with several of Europe’s biggest clubs already registering interest in the teenage midfielder.

Gabriel, who turns 16 on 6 October, has grown frustrated at the lack of first-team opportunities at Old Trafford despite his age, and his family believe his development would be better served at another club. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have all been linked with the youngster, as have unnamed Premier League rivals.

Ferdinand, who visited United’s pre-season camp in Ireland and came away impressed by Gabriel’s ability, nonetheless took a firm stance on how the club should handle the situation. “I just feel that Man United can’t be seen to be bullied by a young kid who is 15 years old, no matter how good he is,” the former United defender said on his YouTube channel.

“Whatever the outcome is, Man United have to remain strong in this until the end because whatever the decision or whatever way this plays out, there will be kids coming after this who will be using it as a reference point and you can’t be seen to be weak in this situation as a football club.”

Ferdinand was careful not to criticise Gabriel personally, noting he did not have the full picture of how the impasse had developed. “I’m not going to sit here and hammer on the kid or pick apart what’s going on because I don’t have the facts around how they’ve got to this situation,” he said.

The former England international, whose own sons Lorenz and Tate are pursuing careers in the Brighton academy, acknowledged he understood the family’s perspective. “As a parent I’m the same,” he admitted. “I want to know what you think of my son and how you see him and how long it will take. But I know that nothing is guaranteed in this game because there are too many things that can alter your path, be it injuries, form, timing and confidence.”

Despite the contractual uncertainty, Ferdinand left no doubt about his assessment of Gabriel’s ceiling. “What a talent this kid is. It’s crazy. I don’t know where this kid’s ceiling is. I’ve seen him play, I’ve seen him train, I’ve listened to people who have coached him for a number of years and there’s no doubt this kid is going to the top.”

Under current regulations, Gabriel cannot be represented by an agent until he turns 16 and would only be permitted to join a new club at the end of the season unless United agree to deregister him before then.
