Tuchel dismisses 'must-win' tag for Czech Republic trip after England's Spain defeat

Thomas Tuchel has pushed back on the ‘must-win’ label surrounding England’s Nations League trip to Prague, insisting it is too early in the group for that kind of framing — even after Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to world and European champions Spain at a sold-out Wembley.

England’s opener produced some encouraging moments but was ultimately undone by individual errors under pressure, a theme that drew uncomfortable comparisons to their semi-final collapse against Argentina at the World Cup. The result leaves Tuchel’s side needing a positive result against the Czech Republic, ranked 49th in the world, when they visit the Fortuna Arena.

“It’s a bit early for a ‘must win’, a bit early in the group for a ‘must win’,” Tuchel said. “We always arrive at every match preparing the team with a target to win. It was the target against Spain, it will be the target tomorrow.”

The England head coach acknowledged the defeat to Spain “puts a bit of pressure” on the squad but described it as “nothing we can’t handle”. He was careful to frame the Prague fixture with respect for the opposition and the atmosphere a home crowd will generate. “If you play in Prague against Czechia, it will be difficult, it will be emotional,” he added.

Defence will be under particular scrutiny after England conceded 12 goals at the World Cup and shipped three more against Spain. Yet Tuchel was largely satisfied with his side’s structural defensive work, placing the blame squarely on errors in possession rather than the backline itself.

“We suffered clearly from individual mistakes when we had the ball, especially in the deep build-up,” he said. “Strangely enough, when we had the ball we were the biggest danger to ourselves around the box because we just had too many individual mistakes. Purely in defending, I have no concerns.”

Tuchel noted the absence of certain players who would ordinarily help organise the defensive block, but stopped short of identifying them as a significant factor, maintaining that there was “no reason to be concerned” about the unit as a whole.
