Tielemans accuses United teammates of lacking effort after 4-1 Champions League humiliation
Youri Tielemans publicly questioned the effort levels inside Manchester United's dressing room after a 4-1 defeat to Como — the club's worst result in Europe since 1996 — compounding their worst Premier League start in 40 years.
Youri Tielemans has called out his own Manchester United teammates over a lack of effort following a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como on Wednesday night — the club’s heaviest European loss since 1996.
The Belgium captain was blunt in his post-match assessment, identifying a three-pronged failure at the heart of United’s collapse. “It’s a combination of everything: tactical, technical, effort,” Tielemans said, the final word landing as the sharpest indictment of a squad already under intense scrutiny.
The result at Old Trafford extended a miserable run that has also produced the club’s worst start to a Premier League season in four decades. Tielemans admitted United were outplayed for the majority of the 90 minutes and that a half-time intervention from the coaching staff failed to produce any response — with Como scoring again almost immediately after the break.
“There was a lot said at half-time to try and get back into the game, which didn’t happen,” he said. “We conceded straight away after half-time, and then you try to do something, and we get outplayed. We got outplayed for most of the game, so it was a very disappointing night.”
Asked to pinpoint the root cause, Tielemans refused to hide behind tactical excuses. “It’s everything. You can be good tactically but if the effort isn’t there, or the other way round, you have to be good at everything, but tonight we were poor at everything.”
He also issued a direct apology to supporters. “We can only apologise to the fans who travelled, the fans who watched us from home and support us. They’re disappointed and we’re disappointed. The only thing we can do is try to show something on the pitch, which we haven’t done over the last few weeks.”
Manager Michael Carrick shouldered personal responsibility for the performance, describing it as “unacceptable” for a club of United’s stature. “I think everybody has got to take responsibility for that. I 100% take responsibility for the overall team and the performance — that’s where it stops,” Carrick said. “As a supporter of this football club for so long, to see a performance like that is unacceptable, I have to say.”
The combination of a record-equalling European defeat and a player openly questioning the dressing room’s work ethic deepens the crisis surrounding the club at one of the most difficult periods in its recent history.
