Carrick refuses to quit talk as United's winless run stretches to seven games
Michael Carrick deflected questions about his future after Manchester United were humiliated 4-1 by Como in the Champions League, leaving the club with just two wins from 11 games this season.
Michael Carrick refused to address speculation about his own future after Manchester United were beaten 4-1 by Como in the Champions League, a result that extended the club’s winless run to seven games in all competitions.
Speaking after the loss on the shores of Lake Como, Carrick said he had not given his position any thought, insisting his focus remained on the supporters and the club rather than himself. When pressed directly on whether he had considered walking away, he sidestepped the question entirely.
“It’s not about me right now, and my feelings in that regard,” Carrick said. “It’s more as a team and as a football club, what we want to look like, what we should look like. And as I said, the results can come and go at times, but you’ve got to do it in a certain way. And that wasn’t it.”
United have won just two of their 11 games this season, and the manner of the defeat appeared to hit Carrick hard. He walked over to the approximately 100 travelling supporters who remained at full-time and raised his palms in a gesture of apology — a moment he addressed directly in his post-match comments.
“I have to apologise to the supporters,” he said. “I went over to the end and I care about this football club as much as anyone, if not more, with the position that I’m in and what I value this football club. For us to play in that way, it’s not acceptable. It wasn’t a good performance at all.”
Carrick also criticised the effort levels of some of his players during the defeat, a rare public rebuke that underlined the depth of his frustration. The combination of a struggling squad, a damaging European result, and a manager unwilling — or unable — to offer clarity on his own future leaves United in an increasingly precarious position.
