Three defeats in four matches, Genesio under pressure but will not resign

Three Ligue 1 defeats in four matchdays have been enough to shake confidence around Bruno Genesio at Olympique de Marseille, to the point that resignation scenarios have begun to circulate — before being firmly denied by the coach’s entourage.

The contrast is striking. On matchday one, OM crushed Strasbourg 4-0 at the Vélodrome and topped the table. Since then, the Marseille club has not won a single match, losing at Monaco (0-2), against Paris FC at home (2-3) and at Rennes (0-1).

The situation is all the more tense as a decisive week looms, with a trip to Besiktas in the Ligue Europa followed by hosting Paris SG at the Vélodrome. It was in this context that Genesio held a press conference on Friday, adopting a deliberately cautious tone on the club’s objectives. “It’s not for me to say that. We must be ambitious in our play with players who step up, which they do in sequences. The objectives, I have them in mind, it’s clear to me,” he said, seeming to await a clear signal from his board.

This statement fuelled speculation: according to some sources, the Marseille coach could throw in the towel in the event of two more defeats this week. An hypothesis that the club’s entourage firmly rejects. “Losing hope is not the style of the man at all, he will not resign,” a source close to the club told La Provence, adding: “There’s nothing enigmatic about it. Besides, it’s not Genesio who goes on that pitch.”

The same source also points to the summer transfer window with zero signings as an unavoidable backdrop to current difficulties: “When you look at the transfer market, you have to be realistic. Why ask a question everyone already knows the answer to?”

Genesio therefore remains in his post, but the coming days, between Besiktas and the derby against PSG, are shaping up as a real test for the rest of his mission at Marseille.
