Around 7,000 tickets for England’s World Cup third-place play-off against France at Miami Stadium on Saturday remain unsold, with roughly 1,000 still on general sale priced between £657 and £855 and a further 5,000 listed on Fifa’s official resale platform at approximately £350 plus a 15% fee.

The match is the penultimate fixture of the tournament, pitting the two semi-final losers against each other after France were beaten by Spain and England surrendered a one-goal lead to Argentina in Atlanta. Category one tickets — the most expensive bracket — are also appearing on the resale market at significantly reduced prices, a further sign of subdued demand.

How many England supporters will make the trip to Miami following the semi-final defeat remains unclear. The Three Lions have lost both of their previous third-place play-offs, falling to Italy in 1990 and Belgium in 2018.

England manager Thomas Tuchel was candid about the motivation challenge facing both squads ahead of the fixture. “None of our players and none of the French players want to play this match,” he said. “They want to play the final. We gave everything to achieve that. Everyone plays to win the World Cup, but that’s how it is.”

Tuchel also noted a scheduling disadvantage, adding: “We have one less day of recovery than France, but we will do it with professionalism.”
