Jesus de Miguel, 30, died on Tuesday morning after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest during Tenerife's second-division match on Monday, following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono in added time.
Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel died at 8am on Tuesday, aged 30, after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest during his side’s second-division match against Andorra on Monday. He collapsed late in added time following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono and was rushed to Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz.
De Miguel was treated on the pitch before being transferred to the intensive care unit, where Tenerife initially reported he was “stable, despite the severity of his condition.” In the early hours of Tuesday, the club confirmed his neurological condition had worsened, and he passed away shortly after dawn.
In a statement, CD Tenerife wrote: “Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, we at CD Tenerife announce the tragic passing of Jesus de Miguel Alameda. There are no words of comfort. There is absolutely nothing that can ease this overwhelming sense of sadness.”
The club added that De Miguel’s family had asked for their privacy to be respected, thanking supporters for their expressions of condolence.
The incident occurred with the score at 2-2, when De Miguel was sent through on goal and Owono rushed out to meet him. The force of the challenge knocked both players to the ground, and Owono was shown a straight red card. The goalkeeper immediately ran to De Miguel’s side, joined by players from both teams and medical staff.
The Spanish Footballers’ Association expressed its “deep sorrow,” saying his loss “leaves a huge void among those of us who shared his passion for football” and conveying condolences to his family, teammates, and club.
Andorra also released a statement: “With broken hearts, we want to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesus de Miguel, to all his teammates, friends, and to CD Tenerife.”
De Miguel had signed a three-year contract with Tenerife in 2025 and had played a role in the club’s recent promotion campaign.
