Tenerife have issued a fresh and alarming update on striker Jesus de Miguel, confirming his neurological condition has deteriorated after he was admitted to the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria following a serious on-pitch collision during Sunday’s Spanish second-division fixture against Andorra.

The 30-year-old was struck by the flying knee of Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono in the closing stages of the match after running onto a long ball. Owono was sent off for the challenge. De Miguel lay motionless on the pitch before teammates recognised the severity of the situation and called for immediate medical attention. Reports in Spain indicated he suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated before being taken to hospital.

On Monday, Tenerife had offered cautious reassurance, stating that De Miguel was “stable despite the severity of his condition.” Less than 24 hours later, however, the club released a second statement that reversed that picture: “Jesús de Miguel’s medical condition has worsened neurologically. More information in the coming hours.”

The incident was distressing enough to cause the match to be abandoned. Video footage from the aftermath showed Owono turning back to check on De Miguel, while several players were visibly unable to watch the scenes unfolding on the pitch.

Opponents Andorra also issued a public message of support. “We want to send all our strength and best wishes to Jesus de Miguel after the serious incident suffered during today’s match,” the club wrote. “We hope he recovers soon. A very strong hug to the player, his family and Tenerife.”

Tenerife said further medical updates would be provided in the coming hours.
