Martinez-Balde swap emerges as Manchester United eye January left-back fix
Manchester United are reportedly exploring a swap deal that would send Lisandro Martinez to Barcelona in exchange for out-of-favour left-back Alejandro Balde, potentially resolving a defensive headache on both sides.
Manchester United are weighing a January swap deal that would see Lisandro Martinez join Barcelona while left-back Alejandro Balde moves to Old Trafford, according to Spanish outlet Marca — a move that could address two of the club’s most pressing problems in one transaction.
Martinez has endured a turbulent start to the season both on and off the pitch. The Argentine centre-back was sent off against Chelsea after picking up two bookings — one for pulling back Morgan Rogers, another for catching Wesley Fofana with a reckless arm — and last month publicly criticised director of football Jason Wilcox over the club’s summer transfer activity. His contract expires at the end of the season, raising the prospect of an early departure.
Barcelona have been linked with a January move for Martinez, but La Liga’s financial regulations mean the Catalans would need to offload a player first. Marca reports that Balde is the most likely candidate to be sold, with the 23-year-old having made just three appearances and no starts under Hansi Flick this season despite racking up 172 appearances for the club overall.
Balde was close to joining United in the summer transfer window but opted to remain at Barcelona and compete for his place. That decision has not paid off, and his long-term future at the Nou Camp now looks uncertain. A swap arrangement would give United the left-back cover they failed to secure in the summer following the absence of Luke Shaw, while freeing Barcelona to bring in Martinez without breaching league spending rules.
Head coach Michael Carrick, who is under pressure following a poor run of results, played down concerns about Martinez’s commitment when asked ahead of United’s Champions League fixture against Roma. “No, I’ve got no concerns about commitment at all,” Carrick said. “Things happen in football. Sometimes you do things, sometimes you make a decision, sometimes you make mistakes. But the commitment is not an issue for sure. The commitment of the players to the club, to me, to each other is something I don’t question at all. We need to play better, we can make better decisions, but commitment’s not a thing at all.”
Whether Carrick remains in charge to oversee any January business remains an open question, with United’s hierarchy understood to be considering their options at the top of the dugout.
