Tantashev set for World Cup debut as Uzbek referee takes charge of Scotland vs Morocco
Ilgiz Tantashev will referee his first-ever World Cup fixture when Scotland face Morocco in their Group C second-round match. The Uzbek official previously took charge of Morocco's Olympic semi-final against Spain in 2024.
Ilgiz Tantashev will become the latest Uzbek official to referee a World Cup match when he takes charge of Scotland’s Group C clash against Morocco, with both sides chasing a result that would all but secure their place in the knockout stages.
Tantashev brings considerable experience from the Asian Champions League to his World Cup debut, and is no stranger to high-stakes Morocco fixtures — he refereed their Olympic semi-final against Spain in 2024. Tonight’s assignment, however, marks his first appearance at a FIFA World Cup.
He will not be the first Uzbek referee to officiate at the tournament. That distinction belongs to Ravshan Irmatov, who holds the record for the most World Cup matches refereed by a single official, having taken charge of 11 games between 2010 and 2018.
Tantashev will be supported by two fellow Uzbek officials on the touchlines: Andrey Tsapenko and Timur Gaynullin as assistant referees. Adham Makhadmeh from Jordan has been appointed fourth official, with compatriot Mohammad Al-Khalaf serving as reserve assistant referee. Armando Villarreal from the United States will act as Video Assistant Referee.
For Scotland, a win would effectively guarantee progression to the last 16. Morocco enter the fixture with a draw against Brazil already on their record, meaning victory would still leave them needing a result in their final group game to feel secure. A defeat for either side would not necessarily end their tournament hopes, with the eight best third-place finishers across all groups also advancing.
