Sunderland snatch Malick Fofana from under Arsenal's nose in deadline day coup

Sunderland have pulled off a deadline day coup by securing an agreement to sign Lyon winger Malick Fofana, ending Arsenal’s hopes of adding the 21-year-old Belgian to their attacking ranks. Fofana has been granted permission to travel and undergo a medical ahead of signing a five-year deal at the Stadium of Light.

Arsenal had identified Fofana as a late-window target as Mikel Arteta sought additional quality in the final third, and the Gunners’ interest went far enough that Arteta spoke directly with the player, according to The Athletic. Sunderland, however, moved faster and secured the agreement before Arsenal could formalise their pursuit.

Regis le Bris’s side have been building their squad ahead of a season in European competition, which has increased the demand on their resources and accelerated their search for attacking reinforcements. Fofana fits that profile — he has scored two goals in six appearances for Lyon already this season, including one in the second leg of their Champions League play-off defeat to Fenerbahce, and has accumulated 19 goals in 83 appearances for the French club overall.

The winger has attracted English interest for some time. Chelsea made a verbal enquiry for him and Everton held talks over a possible move last summer, before Sunderland ultimately won the race.

For Arsenal, the miss comes despite a summer in which they have already added considerably to their attacking options. Christos Tzolis, signed from Club Brugge, has started both of the club’s Premier League fixtures so far alongside Bukayo Saka, while Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, and Max Dowman provide further depth from the bench.

That abundance of attacking talent has, however, pushed some players towards the exit. Ethan Nwaneri is poised to join Borussia Dortmund on loan, while Gabriel Martinelli — a key figure during Arsenal’s rise under Arteta — has been absent from matchday squads this season and is reportedly set for a record departure to Saudi Arabia. Gabriel Jesus, one of only two recognised strikers at the club, is also expected to leave before the window closes.
