Mainoo returns to boost 10-man United squad for crunch Chelsea Premier League clash
Kobbie Mainoo has been included in Manchester United's travelling squad for Sunday's Premier League trip to Chelsea after returning to full training on Wednesday. Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw were not spotted among the 22-man party that departed from Stockport Station on Friday.
Kobbie Mainoo has been named in Manchester United’s 22-man travelling squad for their Premier League fixture at Chelsea, providing manager Michael Carrick with a timely boost after the midfielder returned to full training on Wednesday.
Carrick had hinted at Mainoo’s availability during his pre-match press conference on Thursday, but the news will be tempered by the continued absence of Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw, neither of whom was spotted among the squad as United departed from Stockport Station by train on Friday afternoon.
Rashford has been managing hip and thigh problems. He was named in the squad for the recent game against Leeds at Elland Road but missed the subsequent Champions League fixture against Como. Carrick did not address the forward’s availability when speaking to the media ahead of the Chelsea game.
Shaw has not featured since United’s match against Tottenham on 10 October. When Carrick last discussed the left-back’s recovery, he suggested Shaw would return to the squad shortly after Mainoo, meaning his absence this weekend points to a setback or a cautious approach from the medical staff.
Longer-term absentees Benjamin Sesko and Patrick Dorgu also miss out. Sesko is not expected back until at least January, while United have yet to clarify a return timeline for Dorgu.
The Mainoo news arrives at a critical moment for Carrick. United were beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth last weekend, a result that prompted the club’s decision-makers to reassess the manager’s position. A win at Stamford Bridge would ease that pressure considerably — United claimed a 1-0 victory at the same ground in April as Carrick steered the club back towards Champions League football.
