Mikel Arteta has defended his fiery touchline reaction to Max Dowman’s red card during Arsenal’s FA Cup defeat to Fleetwood, insisting the 16-year-old must understand the uncompromising standards required at the highest level. The Arsenal manager, speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Anfield, refused to apologise for his response and used the moment to draw a sharp line between elite football and comfortable expectations.

“Whether it is right or wrong, that’s the reaction,” Arteta said. “But the reaction when I don’t win, you know what the reaction is? I’m p* off, big time. So we need to be ready for that. This is the environment and this is the reality. Otherwise, we are in Disneyland. We are not in Disneyland.”

The Spaniard was keen to stress that the high standards applied to Dowman are the same ones demanded of every player in the squad. “We are in the Premier League at this level and we look after him so much that you cannot imagine. But at the same time, we’re going to demand him like anybody else because he needs to earn the right to play. Otherwise, the rest of the boys, what are they going to tell me? You need to be fair.”

Arteta also directed criticism at the Football Association after they rejected Arsenal’s appeal against Dowman’s dismissal. The suspension means the teenager will miss domestic fixtures against Liverpool, Hull, and Newcastle.

“Very disappointed, to be fair,” Arteta said of the FA’s decision. “Especially with the reckless tackles that he received, and then his reaction is minimal in relation to the action. Disappointed that it’s not been overturned after looking at the action back.”

The Arsenal manager suggested the context surrounding the incident — including Dowman’s age and the challenges he faced during the match — should have been taken into account. “It could have been really bad, yeah. And we are lucky today that he hasn’t had a broken foot. That’s clear,” he added. “Not only the action, obviously, that it’s evident, and when you look it back in slow motion, the previous action and Max’s action, it’s clear that obviously we have a very different opinion. And on top of that, I think you have to read the context of the player, the age, and what happened previously.”

Despite the frustration over the appeal outcome, Arteta’s message to Dowman was ultimately one of tough encouragement — a reminder that scrutiny and accountability are part of life at a club competing at the top of English football.
