Summerville's World Cup brilliance could push his £50m price beyond Manchester United's reach
Crysencio Summerville has scored twice and added an assist in his first two appearances for the Netherlands at the World Cup, with PSG now entering the race and West Ham free to drive up his asking price beyond the £50m figure already in circulation.
Crysencio Summerville’s electric start to the World Cup is threatening to price Manchester United out of a deal for the West Ham winger, with Paris Saint-Germain now reportedly joining the chase and the Hammers holding all the leverage in negotiations.
The 24-year-old has scored twice and registered an assist in just two appearances for the Netherlands, including a stunning strike in their 2-2 draw with Japan and a further contribution in Saturday’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Sweden. Both outings have come from the bench, underlining the depth of impact he has made without even starting.
A fee of £50 million had been the figure consistently linked with Summerville, who is widely expected to leave the London Stadium this summer following West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League. However, with no buyout clause in his contract, the Hammers are under no obligation to accept any particular figure — and his performances in the United States are giving them every reason to hold firm for more.
PSG are now said to be monitoring the situation, with the French club anticipated to sanction Bradley Barcola’s departure and subsequently searching for a new left-sided attacker. That added competition could significantly complicate United’s pursuit.
Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman hinted after the Sweden win that Summerville may be handed a starting role as the tournament progresses, suggesting he offers more defensive discipline than Donyell Malen. “I think Summerville is stronger defensively,” Koeman said. “I understand that the substitution is difficult for Donyell, but this is top-level football. Team performances are what matter.”
Koeman also outlined the tactical freedom he has afforded Summerville: “Before the match, I sat down with him and explained why he would play on the right and that he would have the freedom to cut inside because he is not a natural right winger.”
The Netherlands face Group F’s bottom side Tunisia on 26 June, giving Summerville another opportunity to add to his tally. Tunisia have conceded nine goals across their opening two fixtures, losing 5-1 to Sweden and 4-0 to Japan.
In the Premier League last season, Summerville managed five goals and four assists across 31 appearances for West Ham — solid numbers for a side that was relegated. His World Cup form suggests those figures significantly undersell his ceiling, a reality that United, and now PSG, are being forced to reckon with.
