Sterling arrested on M3 after sources describe 'immeasurable' psychological strain
Raheem Sterling was arrested on suspicion of driving unfit through drugs following a collision on the M3 on 28 May. Sources close to the 31-year-old say the former England winger has been made to feel 'worthless' and 'forgotten about' during an extremely difficult two years.
Raheem Sterling was arrested by Hampshire Constabulary on Thursday 28 May after his Lamborghini collided with barriers on the M3 southbound near the Minley Interchange. The 31-year-old, who currently plays for Feyenoord in the Netherlands, was held on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drugs, dangerous driving, possession of a class C drug, and failing to provide a specimen. He has since been bailed while inquiries continue.
In a statement, Hampshire Constabulary confirmed the incident occurred just before 9am, that no other vehicles were involved, and that no injuries were reported. Sterling’s representatives confirmed the arrest to the Press Association.
Sources close to the former England international painted a stark picture of his mental state in the lead-up to the incident. “How a prolific English international who has steered the England squad to significant heights over the last decade has been made to feel worthless — forgotten about,” a source said. “The psychological strain that has put on him is immeasurable. Isolated. The second he touches a ball, being told he’s a flop and he’s finished. Mocked. Heckled.”
The source said Sterling had moved to the Netherlands specifically to escape that negativity and rediscover his love for football, but that the criticism followed him. “It’s been an extremely tough couple of years for him and this incident encompasses that,” they added.
The source was also careful to stress that Sterling had been arrested “under suspicion” only, and that there is no “proof of anything in his system” at this stage.
Sterling, who built his career at Liverpool and Manchester City before spells at Chelsea and Arsenal, joined Feyenoord in a bid to revive his form. The arrest marks a turbulent endpoint to what sources describe as a prolonged period of personal and professional difficulty for the winger.
