South Korean goalkeeper's blunder gifts Mexico top spot in Group A
On a glaring error by goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gyu, Mexico beat South Korea 1-0 thanks to a goal from Romo and becomes the first team qualified for the round of 16, topping Group A with six points.
Mexico secured qualification for the round of 16 by beating South Korea 1-0, with a goal from Romo following a serious error by opposing goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gyu shortly after half-time. La Tri also secured top spot in Group A.
Unconvincing since the start of the tournament — already laborious against South Africa on matchday one — Mexico did not shine any brighter against South Korea. But efficiency proved sufficient once again. It was Kim Seung-Gyu who gifted the match’s only goal: the South Korean goalkeeper committed a glaring handball in the second half, and Romo made no mistake in finishing.
With six points on the board, Mexico holds a three-point lead over South Korea in second place. Czech Republic and South Africa bring up the rear with one point each.
The final matchday promises to be decisive for the second qualifying spot. South Korea, who face South Africa, have a comfortable margin. Czech Republic, meanwhile, find themselves in a precarious position before facing Mexico, already assured of their place in the competition.
