South Korea, South Africa and Czech Republic's World Cup 2026 Group A qualification scenarios explained
Mexico have already secured top spot in Group A, leaving South Korea, South Africa and Czech Republic all fighting for the remaining two knockout places heading into the final round of fixtures.
Mexico are through and sitting top of World Cup 2026 Group A, but the three teams below them — South Korea, South Africa and Czech Republic — all retain a realistic chance of joining them in the knockout rounds ahead of the final matchday.
South Korea sit second on three points after winning their opening fixture, while South Africa and Czech Republic are level on one point each following their draw against each other. With 32 of the 48 nations advancing — the top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed finishers — there is genuine jeopardy across all three remaining positions.
How South Korea qualify
South Korea’s path is the most straightforward. A win or draw against South Africa in their final group game is enough to guarantee progression. Victory would take them to six points and confirm second place, while a draw would leave them on four — the maximum Czech Republic can reach — and they would still advance in second on head-to-head record against the Czechs.
Defeat would drop South Korea to three points and make them reliant on Czech Republic’s result against Mexico to determine whether they can survive as one of the best third-placed sides.
What South Africa need
South Africa must beat South Korea to take control of their own destiny. A win would lift them above the Koreans in the table, and four points would be enough to finish at least third, with their final standing then dependent on the Mexico vs Czech Republic result.
A draw would leave South Africa on two points — almost certainly insufficient to qualify as one of the eight best third-placed teams. Defeat would effectively eliminate them.
Czech Republic’s route through
Czech Republic face the steepest climb. They must beat Mexico — who have already won the group — in their final fixture, and even then they remain dependent on other results to determine whether their points tally is enough to advance as a third-placed side.
A defeat or draw for Czech Republic would end their tournament, leaving South Africa and South Korea to contest the group’s remaining knockout spot between themselves.
How third-place qualification works
Of the 16 groups at the expanded 48-team World Cup 2026, eight third-placed finishers advance to the round of 32. Those spots are awarded to the third-placed teams with the highest points totals across all groups, with goal difference and goals scored used as tiebreakers where necessary. That means a team finishing third can still qualify — but the margin for error is slim.
