Song Yadong delivered the biggest win of his career on Saturday, stopping Umar Nurmagomedov by knockout in the second round of the UFC Shanghai main event to hand the Russian his first-ever stoppage defeat as a professional fighter.

Nurmagomedov entered the bout at 20-1, riding a two-fight winning streak over Deiveson Figueiredo and Mario Bautista after dropping a decision to bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 311. A victory in Shanghai would have placed him firmly in contention for another title shot, but Song’s finish has reshuffled the division’s contender picture entirely.

Shortly after the event concluded, Nurmagomedov addressed his supporters on social media in Russian. “Everything is fine with me,” he wrote, in a post translated via Instagram. “Alhamdulillah. Thank you so much to everyone who writes. I will work on the mistakes. And I will be back.”

The loss drops Nurmagomedov to 20-2 as a professional, with both defeats now coming inside the UFC. His first setback arrived against Dvalishvili in a competitive championship bout decided on the judges’ scorecards; this second, by contrast, was a definitive finish that raises genuine questions about where he fits in the bantamweight hierarchy going forward.

Song, meanwhile, vaults himself into title contention with the statement win. The timing is significant: Dvalishvili is scheduled to defend the bantamweight title against former champion Petr Yan in a trilogy bout at UFC 333 on October 24 in Abu Dhabi, and Song’s performance makes him a credible challenger to whoever emerges from that main event.

For Nurmagomedov, the road back to a title shot has lengthened considerably. His response on social media was brief but composed, and consistent with the measured public persona he has maintained throughout his UFC career. Whether the division grants him a swift route back to contention will depend largely on how the matchmakers assess Saturday’s result.
