Severe storms threaten to delay France vs Iraq World Cup clash in Philadelphia
FIFA has activated weather protocols ahead of France's second World Cup group-stage match against Iraq at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, with severe storms forecast that could force fan evacuations and push the game to the following day.
FIFA officials are preparing emergency weather protocols for France’s World Cup group-stage match against Iraq at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, after severe storms were forecast to hit the city on match night.
Under FIFA regulations, play must be halted if lightning strikes within eight miles of the stadium, at which point fans are required to move to concourses or emergency shelter facilities. The game cannot resume until 30 consecutive lightning-free minutes have passed. Should interruptions prove prolonged, the match could be postponed to the following day.
Lauren Lambrugo, chief operating officer of Philadelphia Soccer 2026, outlined the contingency plan. “They’ll start to evacuate the stadium to the main concourse and seek emergency shelter,” she told The Mirror. “And then it has to wait 30 minutes prior to them bringing everybody back on the field. They will make sure that the match is broadcast and played tomorrow.”
France enter the fixture as heavy favourites, but the weather threat adds an unpredictable element to what should be a straightforward second group-stage outing.
Storms have loomed as a concern throughout this summer’s tournament in the United States, though no competitive match has yet been disrupted. An England vs Costa Rica warm-up game did suffer weather-related delays, and last summer’s Club World Cup — also held in the USA — saw several fixtures halted or temporarily suspended due to similar conditions.
