Scotland cling to World Cup 2026 last chance as miracle permutations mount
Scotland finished third in Group C with three points and a -3 goal difference, leaving their round-of-32 hopes dependent on results across six other groups. Captain John McGinn admitted the side need a 'miracle' to survive.
Scotland’s World Cup 2026 campaign is on life support after finishing third in Group C with three points and a goal difference of -3, placing them eighth — and last — among the third-placed teams currently ranked to advance to the round of 32.
Steve Clarke’s side were undone by a combination of their own results and arithmetic. They conceded three times against Brazil and scored only once against Haiti, while a defeat to Morocco in between compounded the damage. Even with the same win-loss record as some rivals, their goal difference left them with almost no margin for error.
John McGinn, who wore the captain’s armband in the second half against Brazil after Andy Robertson was substituted, was candid after the final whistle. “We need a miracle to go through,” the midfielder said, and the numbers bear that out.
With Groups G, H, I, J, K and L all yet to complete their third group-stage matches, Scotland’s fate is entirely out of their hands. Eighth place is the final qualifying position among third-placed teams, meaning they are currently in — but only just, and only for now.
The permutations are numerous and shifting. Croatia, currently fifth among third-placed sides, still face Ghana in Group L. Scotland need Croatia to lose by more than two goals to erode their goal-difference advantage. Algeria, seventh, are just one goal better off than Scotland in both goal difference and goals scored; their final Group J fixture against Austria means a point for either side could alter the picture significantly.
Elsewhere, Cape Verde sit ninth in Group H with two points and face Saudi Arabia, whose own elimination scenario could affect how that group’s third-placed team finishes. In Group G, Scotland need Belgium to beat New Zealand and Egypt to defeat Iran, while also requiring Uzbekistan to take at least a draw against DR Congo in Group K.
The situation will remain unresolved until the final group-stage matches conclude, with some results not expected until the early hours of Sunday morning in Scotland. Clarke’s squad are waiting at their training base in Charlotte, watching the scorelines roll in from across the tournament.
