Schmeichel insists Messi's record-breaking World Cup goal should have been disallowed
Peter Schmeichel has argued that Lionel Messi's historic opener against Austria — which made him the World Cup's all-time leading scorer, surpassing Miroslav Klose — should have been ruled out for an Alexis Mac Allister foul earlier in the move.
Peter Schmeichel has called for Lionel Messi’s record-breaking goal against Austria to be struck from the books, arguing that a foul by Alexis Mac Allister earlier in the build-up should have stopped play before the Argentina captain could score.
Messi netted his 17th World Cup goal to surpass Miroslav Klose as the tournament’s all-time leading scorer, rounding off a flowing team move to put Argentina ahead. He added a second in stoppage time to seal the win and Argentina’s place in the knockout rounds.
Former Manchester United and Denmark goalkeeper Schmeichel, however, was unconvinced the opener should have stood. Speaking to Fox Sports, he said: “I don’t think that goal should have stood. Think about how they get the penalty — this is a kick from behind through Xaver Schlager. Mac Allister has kicked the player down. That should have been a free-kick. VAR should have taken that back. That is a clear and obvious mistake by the referee.”
He added: “And for that I feel a little bit frustrated.”
The controversy did little to diminish Messi’s evening overall. The 38-year-old had earlier missed a penalty that would have given him the record sooner, firing wide when the chance to move clear of Klose presented itself from the spot. He ultimately needed no such help, completing the milestone through open play before adding a second late on.
Reflecting on the achievement after the match, Messi said: “I’m tired and I’m running on fumes. It’s hard to think. But I’m enjoying this moment and looking forward to being with my teammates. It’s been spectacular how it has all unfolded.”
Teammate Julian Alvarez was equally effusive in his praise. “He continues to demonstrate, even at his age, that he has the talent and all his magic,” Alvarez said. “There’s not much to say. We all see it — he’s the best in the world. It gives us peace of mind for what’s to come.”
Argentina, already through to the next round after back-to-back wins, face Jordan in their final group game. They could secure top spot in the group if Jordan fail to beat Algeria.
