Senegal suffered their second consecutive defeat, losing 3-2 to Norway on matchday two of the group stage, but it is France who benefits from this result.

The Lions of Teranga, already beaten by the Blues in their opening match (3-1), conceded a goal just before half-time before seeing Erling Haaland double the lead after the restart. Ismaïla Sarr pulled his side back to 2-1, but the Norwegian goalscorer restored a two-goal advantage before the hour mark. In added time, Sarr reduced the deficit once more to make it 3-2 — an inconsequential goal for Senegal, but decisive for France.

Because this goal changes everything in the group standings. Both on six points after two wins in two matches, France and Norway were to be separated by goal difference. With six goals scored and just one conceded, the Blues now lead the Norwegians, who have seven goals scored but three conceded.

This first place has concrete strategic value. A simple draw will be enough for Didier Deschamps’ side on Friday, in the direct clash against Norway, to keep top of the group. An objective clearly stated by the French manager, who wishes to remain on the east coast to avoid long trips for the rest of the competition.
