William Saliba has admitted he is carrying a back problem into the 2026 World Cup, conceding he is not fully fit after the physical demands of Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning season.

Speaking at France’s Boston base ahead of their group-stage fixtures, the centre-back was candid about the toll the campaign has taken. “I’ve had some minor niggles for several months,” Saliba said. “I’ve been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League. But the coaching staff are handling it very well.”

The 24-year-old, who joins Arsenal teammates Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice in managing the physical aftermath of a long domestic season, made clear he has no intention of withdrawing. “The World Cup comes round only once every four years, so you’ve got to grit your teeth,” he added. “I’m not at 100 per cent, but there are plenty of players who aren’t at 100 per cent either — you cannot make excuses.”

France opened their tournament with a comfortable win over Senegal in New Jersey, with captain Kylian Mbappé scoring twice, including a stoppage-time strike. Bradley Barcola, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal, also got on the scoresheet, while Michael Olise continued his impressive form to further fuel speculation over his club future.

Real Madrid issued a statement on Saturday denying they are in discussions with Olise’s representatives over personal terms, a move widely interpreted as an attempt to manage their relationship with Bayern Munich ahead of a potential future approach.

Saliba, who has watched Olise’s rise at close quarters with the national team, offered measured praise while urging caution over the comparisons being drawn with French football legends. “He’s a star, but he has a lot to accomplish before he can be compared to Zidane or Platini,” Saliba said. “He can do everything on the pitch. He’s world-class — he can dribble, he shoots. He’s a joy to watch.”

Barcola’s own future is drawing increasing attention. The PSG forward is entering the final two years of his contract, and despite ongoing extension talks, no agreement has been reached. Liverpool are also reported to be monitoring the 23-year-old’s situation, adding competition to any potential Arsenal pursuit.
