PSG dominated FC Barcelona 4-2 at Parc des Princes on Tuesday evening in the Champions League, but Matvey Safonov’s performance drew criticism. Seven days after an identical victory at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City, the Parisian club confirmed its ability to trouble Europe’s best teams — though not without some lapses.

Bixente Lizarazu praised « PSG’s exceptional collective strength and its incredible ability to create countless chances, regardless of its situation and the moments in the match ». The 1998 World Cup winner, however, highlighted a recurring weakness in the Russian goalkeeper: both Barcelona goals went in near his near post.

It was on the first, scored by Xavi Espart in the 55th minute, that Lizarazu judged Safonov « somewhat at fault ». He was more lenient on the second, scored by Lamine Yamal in the 79th: « the second is in any case very difficult to prevent », he noted.

Despite these reservations, the former left-back tempered his verdict. « In his admittedly unorthodox style, he still made the necessary saves. His great quality is not giving information to the opposing shooter until the very last moment. In the end, Safonov was still effective. » A record sufficient in Luis Enrique’s eyes, who continues to trust him ahead of Lucas Chevalier.

The evening was also marred by injuries to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembélé and Marquinhos, whose severity remains to be determined.
