The match between Olympique de Marseille and Le Havre, scheduled for Sunday, October 25 at the Vélodrome for matchday 8 of Ligue 1 (kick-off at 17:15), is not yet guaranteed. The police prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône has not cancelled anything so far, but restrictive measures remain possible “in case of emergency” if serious incidents occur before Sunday.

The threat hangs over an already busy sporting weekend in the city. Around 80,000 people are expected between the national mobilization day planned for Saturday, October 24 across the country and the 20-kilometre Marseille-Cassis race launched Sunday morning from the Vélodrome. Such an influx will mobilize significant human and logistical resources among law enforcement, in a context of tensions still high following scenes of looting that affected the city centre.

On the sporting front, the stakes are real for OM. The Marseille club, buoyed by two consecutive league victories against Troyes and Angers, are targeting a third straight win against a Le Havre side bottom of the table. The Vélodrome should be full, boosted by school holidays and an expected more family-oriented attendance than in previous matchdays, where the North stand remains suspended.

According to information gathered by La Provence from the prefecture, the situation will be reassessed as Saturday’s events unfold before any final decision concerning the following day’s match.
