Chalobah reveals regret at Chelsea exit after £30m Como move: 'I wanted to be a legend there'
Trevoh Chalobah has opened up on his departure from Chelsea, admitting he hoped to become a club legend at Stamford Bridge before being sold to Serie A side Como for £30 million in the summer.
Trevoh Chalobah has admitted he regrets the way his Chelsea career ended, revealing his ambition had been to become a “legend” at Stamford Bridge before the club sold him to Como for £30 million last summer.
The 27-year-old centre-back joined Chelsea at the age of eight and went on to make more than 150 first-team appearances, winning two Club World Cups, an FA Cup, and the Conference League during his time in west London. Despite what he described as one of his best individual seasons, Chelsea deemed him surplus to requirements and moved him on to the Italian club ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.
“The team didn’t achieve what we wanted to achieve last season, but I thought I had one of my best seasons, playing the most games and scoring a few goals,” Chalobah told The Athletic. “I’d been there since I was eight and I wanted to be a legend there, but sometimes the way we plan things is not how things work out.”
The England international said he has remained emotionally connected to his former club. “Chelsea means everything to me. I’m still watching the games, keeping in contact with the players and staff.”
Chalobah’s move to Como was facilitated in part by the personal approach of manager Cesc Fabregas, the former Chelsea midfielder who now leads the Lombardy club. “The manager reached out to me over the summer and explained the project and where he saw me playing,” Chalobah said. “He really wanted me and my experience. That felt good and it was time for a change.”
He added that the prospect of experiencing football abroad again made the decision straightforward. “As a footballer, it’s good to experience different things. The football is amazing. The manager we have is great.”
Como finished fourth in Serie A last season to secure Champions League qualification for the first time in the club’s history. They face Manchester United on Wednesday evening, with Michael Carrick’s side in urgent need of points after a six-game winless run.
