Portugal’s World Cup 2026 campaign began with a frustrating 1-1 draw against DR Congo on Wednesday, and the fallout has spilled onto social media — with Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister Katia Aveiro among those wading in.

Joao Neves gave Roberto Martinez’s side an early lead with a sixth-minute header, but Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa equalised to deny Portugal all three points. Despite dominating possession at 75 per cent, the European giants managed only three shots on target, with Ronaldo himself failing to register a single attempt on goal.

Katia Aveiro ‘liked’ an Instagram post from a Brazilian account that criticised Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, who played the full 90 minutes alongside Ronaldo. The post, featuring a picture of Fernandes, read: “This one here is the Raphinha for Portugal. Too much popcorn for the national team.”

The social media reaction extended well beyond Ronaldo’s family. Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Neves found his Instagram comments section hijacked by angry Ronaldo supporters after he addressed the 40-year-old’s role in the squad post-match.

“We know what Cristiano has done for this national team and for the world of football,” Neves said. “But right now, he is one of us. He is no different. He is an additional player to help and contribute to Portugal’s performance just like all of us. He played very well, the whole team had an excellent match. We are united.”

Vitinha and Pedro Neto have also seen their comments sections flooded by supporters demanding greater respect for Ronaldo. Reports suggest Neves’ partner has similarly been targeted on social media.

Ronaldo himself drew scrutiny for a muted display, registering just 25 touches across the full match. Supporters on X were divided over whether the five-time Ballon d’Or winner should retain his guaranteed starting place, with one writing: “Ronaldo just gets in the way, and only those who don’t want to see it won’t. It’s ridiculous that he has a guaranteed place in the national team.”

Portugal will need to regroup quickly if they are to recover from a damaging opening result in their World Cup group.
