Ronaldo scores twice as Portugal eye potential Messi quarterfinal at World Cup 2026
Cristiano Ronaldo netted twice in Portugal's 5-0 rout of Uzbekistan to advance from Group K, setting up a possible World Cup quarterfinal against Lionel Messi's Argentina on July 11 in Kansas City.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Portugal crushed Uzbekistan 5-0 in World Cup 2026 group-stage action on Tuesday, advancing from Group K and keeping alive the prospect of a historic quarterfinal meeting with Lionel Messi and Argentina.
Portugal now face Colombia in Miami on Saturday in a winner-takes-all clash to decide who tops Group K. Argentina, who won Group J, would be the likely quarterfinal opponents on July 11 in Kansas City — but only after both sides navigate their Round of 32 and Round of 16 ties.
Asked after the Uzbekistan win whether he was looking forward to a potential reunion with Messi on the biggest stage, Ronaldo kept his focus measured. “It would be ‘top’ but what’s more important is today,” he said. “To try and win the group and prepare for what is coming. We are going to have a tough game vs. Colombia. But the main objective was to get through the group and we did it. I played well, I helped the team, the team is doing well, and we’ll keep going.”
The numbers behind a possible Ronaldo-Messi World Cup encounter are striking. Messi leads the all-time World Cup scoring charts with 18 goals, compared to Ronaldo’s 10, and currently sits top of the Golden Boot race with five goals in this tournament. Ronaldo has scored in all six of his World Cup appearances; Messi went without in 2010.
Across domestic and international football, the pair have met 36 times including friendlies. In official competitive matches, Messi holds the edge with 16 wins to Ronaldo’s 11. Crucially, they have never faced each other at a World Cup — the one major trophy that has so far eluded Ronaldo throughout an otherwise decorated career.
For that to change, Portugal must first get past Colombia on Saturday.
