Ronaldo misses everything against Nigeria six days before World Cup: press alarmed
Starting in the friendly Portugal-Nigeria match (2-1) on Wednesday evening, Cristiano Ronaldo missed at least three clear chances, including several one-on-one situations with the goalkeeper, just six days before Portugal's opening match at the 2026 World Cup.
Cristiano Ronaldo delivered an alarming performance in the friendly Portugal-Nigeria match (2-1) played Wednesday evening, just six days before Portugal’s entry into the 2026 World Cup against the Democratic Republic of Congo (June 17).
Started up front by Roberto Martinez, CR7 found himself alone in front of the Nigerian goalkeeper at least three times — in the 9th, 43rd and 50th minutes — without ever managing to get a shot on target, whether on aerial balls or low crosses. An unusual wastefulness for the 41-year-old striker, who failed to score a single goal in this final warm-up.
European media were quick to sound the alarm. Marca points out that “his lack of finishing in front of goal could become a concern as the World Cup’s opening match approaches, with Ronaldo expected to lead the attack”. The Daily Mail speaks of “a night to forget” and notes that the debate over the Portuguese captain’s role “is raging”. German newspaper Bild is even harsher: “The Portuguese superstar is not yet at the level for the World Cup. Cristiano Ronaldo wasted several clear-cut chances — and this against an opponent that won’t even participate in the competition.”
On the Portuguese media side, the tone is more measured: Portuguese outlets preferred to highlight Sérgio Conceição’s performance rather than number 7’s misses. But the question of his role in the Seleção’s attacking setup remains open as Portugal prepares to enter the competition.
