Ronaldo defends João Neves with unity message after cyberbullying campaign
After João Neves was targeted by a cyberbullying campaign following comments about Cristiano Ronaldo that were misinterpreted, the Portuguese captain posted a group photo with two words: "Always united!"
Cristiano Ronaldo spoke out on social media to defend his teammate João Neves, who became the target of a cyberbullying wave after Portugal’s 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup.
It all started with an innocuous response from Neves in the mixed zone. When asked about Ronaldo, the PSG midfielder explained that “everyone was in the same boat.” Some fans of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner interpreted these words as criticism of their idol and launched an insult campaign against the 20-year-old player.
Facing this controversy, Ronaldo first posted a training photo showing him alongside Nuno Mendes, Bernardo Silva and João Neves, accompanied by two words: “Always united!” He then posted a personal story with a second message: “Focus on what you can control.”
The gesture is clear: the Portuguese captain refuses to let internal tensions, real or imagined, undermine the Seleção’s preparation. Portugal, presented as one of the tournament favorites, finds itself in a delicate position after this opening draw. With two points behind Colombia at the top of Group K, Roberto Martinez’s side can no longer afford any slip-ups.
Their next match against Uzbekistan on Tuesday at NRG Stadium in Houston looms as a crucial appointment. Against the group’s apparently most accessible opponent, a victory is imperative to revive Portugal’s campaign before facing tougher challenges.
