Roma's interest in Garnacho and Greenwood could hand Man United a double sell-on windfall
AS Roma are reportedly targeting both Alejandro Garnacho and Mason Greenwood this summer. Manchester United stand to benefit significantly from sell-on clauses inserted into both players' original departure deals.
Manchester United could pocket substantial sell-on fees from two former academy products this summer, with AS Roma emerging as a suitor for both Alejandro Garnacho and Mason Greenwood, according to reports from Italian outlet Il Messaggero.
United included a 10% sell-on clause in Garnacho’s £40 million move to Chelsea last summer, and a reported 40–50% sell-on in Greenwood’s deal when he departed for Marseille. Should either player move on, Old Trafford’s hierarchy stands to receive a meaningful financial return without any further involvement in the transfers.
Gian Piero Gasperini, a year into his tenure at the Stadio Olimpico, is said to be targeting two wide attackers to operate behind Donyell Malen, with both Garnacho and Greenwood identified as candidates.
Garnacho, 22, endured an underwhelming debut season at Stamford Bridge after forcing through his move to west London. Chelsea are reportedly open to a permanent sale, though no club-to-club talks have yet taken place. The Argentine still has six years remaining on his contract but has struggled to nail down a regular starting position under a turbulent campaign for the club.
Greenwood’s situation at Marseille is more complicated. Roma are said to be preparing a bid of around £38.5 million, while the Ligue 1 side are reportedly holding out for closer to €55 million (£47m). The Englishman has also publicly expressed a desire to remain in the south of France.
“Ligue 1 is an amazing league,” Greenwood said in May. “We play some incredible games and, to my mind, it’s one of the best leagues I have played in. I hope I will be able to stay put here.”
Both deals remain at an early stage, and significant obstacles — including player willingness and fee negotiations — would need to be cleared before United could expect to see any windfall materialise.
