England beat Mexico 3-2 in a pulsating World Cup group-stage match at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Monday, 6 July, with kick-off pushed back to 2am local time. The result sparked wild celebrations among travelling supporters, who broke into a rendition of Oasis’s Wonderwall — a track that has become an unofficial anthem for the Three Lions at the 2026 tournament — with the players joining in on the pitch.

Harry Kane, who led the singalong, was visibly struggling to speak during a post-match interview with BBC Sport, his voice all but gone. That was enough for Liam Gallagher to wade in on X, posting: “It’s hard work that singing Harry Kane cmon ENGLAND cmon WONDERWALL.”

The moment captured a broader wave of celebrity reaction to the result. Sir David Beckham posted a series of Instagram stories calling it “without a doubt a brilliant” performance, singling out manager Thomas Tuchel and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford — whose display he described as “absolutely nothing other than perfection” — before adding: “Huge team performance. A night to be proud of each and everyone of the squad.”

EastEnders actor Ross Kemp was equally effusive, posting a video on Instagram in which he called it “without a doubt the best England performance I think I’ve ever seen” and “true English spirit.”

Amelia Dimoldenberg, known for her Chicken Shop Date series, shared a video online captioned “we did it!”, while TV personality Jamie Laing and musicians Rita Ora and Lewis Capaldi — who watched the match together at a London pub — also posted their reactions.

The Wonderwall singalong has now become a recurring feature of England’s 2026 World Cup campaign, with fans replicating the scenes at fanzones across the country, including in Manchester.
