Roma lead race for Greenwood as United's sell-on clause nears a £21m windfall
Mason Greenwood is closing in on a summer exit from Marseille, with Roma emerging as frontrunners after making contact with the forward's father. Manchester United hold a sell-on clause worth up to 50 per cent of any transfer fee, potentially netting them around £21m from a £43m deal.
Manchester United are set to receive a significant financial windfall this summer as Mason Greenwood edges closer to leaving Marseille, with Roma leading the chase for the 24-year-old striker.
Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Roma have already made contact with Greenwood’s father, and the England-born forward is said to be keen on the Italian club’s project. Marseille are seeking £43m for Greenwood, who remains under contract at the Stade Vélodrome until 2029. United inserted a sell-on clause worth up to 50 per cent of any future fee when they sold him to Marseille for £26.6m in 2024, meaning they could stand to receive as much as £21m from a deal at that valuation.
Greenwood has been one of Ligue 1’s standout performers in 2025/26, registering 26 goals and 11 assists across all competitions and earning a place in the division’s team of the season. Despite that form, Marseille’s failure to qualify for the Champions League has placed the club under mounting financial pressure. France’s financial regulator is reportedly requiring the club to complete several player sales before June 30th, with the club described as being in a “precarious financial situation”.
Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus have all been credited with interest in the forward, while Turkish reports have linked Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi with a move to sign Greenwood as a flagship statement of intent. Roma, however, are said to be ahead of the field and are hoping that existing ties with Marseille will smooth negotiations.
Greenwood himself has previously expressed a desire to remain in Marseille, and acknowledged the club’s difficult recent run when speaking after his team-of-the-season nomination. “This season has sometimes been difficult collectively, especially in recent months,” he said. “But individually I think I’ve had a good season.”
The forward joined Marseille permanently after a loan spell at Getafe, having been suspended by United in 2022 following charges of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour. Greenwood denied all charges, which were subsequently dropped, but United determined he could not return to the club and completed his sale the following year.
