Rodri slams Cape Verde's defensive tactics after Spain held to World Cup opener stalemate
Spain were frustrated to a goalless draw by Cape Verde in their World Cup opener, with Rodri criticising the minnows' deep defensive approach while admitting his side failed to convert 27 attempts on goal.
Spain’s World Cup campaign began with a shock stalemate as Cape Verde held the Euro 2024 champions to a goalless draw in their Group opener, prompting a pointed response from midfielder Rodri about the opposition’s defensive approach.
The European champions dominated possession — finishing with 74 percent of the ball and 27 attempts on goal — but could not find a way through a disciplined Cape Verde side who celebrated the result as though they had won the tournament itself. For a nation of half a million people, holding one of international football’s powerhouses was a remarkable achievement.
Rodri, speaking to La 1 after the match, was measured in his assessment but did not hide his frustration. “It wasn’t meant to be. There’s little to complain about. We knew it was a game that required patience. They sat back and they dropped back very quickly. We couldn’t put it in. We created chances, but couldn’t finish. The positive thing is that they barely created anything against us. We need to improve our finishing.”
When pressed specifically on Cape Verde’s tactics, the Manchester City midfielder was blunt. “That’s how they play. They don’t get past midfield,” he said. “It’s a matter of improving our finishing.”
Lamine Yamal, returning from an injury-hit period, was named on the bench at kick-off and introduced on 70 minutes, with Nico Williams and Dani Olmo also thrown on in search of a breakthrough. None of it was enough to unlock a resolute Cape Verde defensive structure.
The hero for Cape Verde was goalkeeper Vozinha, who was photographed in tears at full-time before being handed the Player of the Match award. “It was a great match,” he said. “We worked incredibly hard for this moment and this dream. We are very proud. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy.”
Rodri is no stranger to facing deep defensive blocks — it is a regular challenge in the Premier League with Manchester City — but Spain’s lack of clinical edge in the final third proved costly. The result leaves Luis de la Fuente’s side needing to sharpen considerably before their next group fixture against Saudi Arabia, with Uruguay to follow in the final group game.
