Richards slams England's timid display as Ghana hold Three Lions to goalless draw
England were frustrated by a disciplined Ghana side in a 0-0 draw in their second World Cup 2026 Group L match, leaving Micah Richards and Wayne Rooney critical of the Three Lions' lack of bravery and attacking intent.
England failed to break down a resolute Ghana side in a goalless draw in their second World Cup 2026 Group L fixture, with pundit Micah Richards leading the criticism of a performance he described as lacking bravery.
The Three Lions entered the match needing a win to build momentum toward the knockout rounds, but Ghana’s low block nullified England’s attacking threat throughout. England failed to register a shot on target in the first half and never truly found their rhythm after the break. The closest they came was a Nico O’Reilly header that struck the crossbar, with Harry Kane blazing the rebound over from close range.
Despite the disappointment, England remain well-placed to advance, sitting on four points from two matches and all but confirmed for the next round. It is, however, the second draw England have recorded at a fourth consecutive major tournament.
Speaking after the match, Richards drew an unflattering comparison with England’s energetic display against Croatia the previous week. “The frustrating thing for me was England weren’t brave enough,” he said. “We talked about Croatia when they were in the formation and knew exactly what they wanted to do, they were energetic. I just feel as though people were making too many safe passes. You’ve got to be more brave when you’re up against a team in that low block.”
Former England captain Wayne Rooney echoed those concerns, pointing to a failure to exploit the wide areas consistently enough. “For me the key was getting crosses into the box, that’s where all the chances came from and we didn’t get enough crosses in,” Rooney said. “That was a typical Carlos Queiroz team performance. Ghana were excellent — the discipline, the concentration in how they defended.”
Goalkeeper Joe Hart offered a more measured verdict, acknowledging Ghana’s quality while urging England not to overreact. “It’s key that we don’t get too high and we don’t get too low,” Hart said. “Credit to Ghana, an absolutely brilliant gameplan and they could have nicked it. Loads of things to work on, it’s just a difficult night.”
England will need a sharper, more courageous performance in their remaining group match if they are to head into the knockout rounds with genuine confidence.
