Renard starts with 4-0 defeat to Japan as Tunisia eliminated from 2026 World Cup
Appointed urgently after the 5-1 thrashing by Sweden, Hervé Renard failed to turn things around for Tunisia: the Eagles of Carthage lost 4-0 to Japan on Sunday, resulting in elimination from the 2026 World Cup.
Tunisia is eliminated from the 2026 World Cup after a 4-0 defeat to Japan on Sunday, in Hervé Renard’s first match in charge of the Eagles of Carthage. The French coach, appointed urgently after the heavy opening defeat against Sweden (5-1), failed to reverse the trend.
The Renard effect, expected as a shock to the system, did not materialize. The man who led Zambia (2012) and Côte d’Ivoire (2015) to African Cup of Nations titles, then guided Saudi Arabia to their historic victory over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup, could not halt the downward spiral of a Tunisian side in serious trouble.
With two defeats in two matches and nine goals conceded, Tunisia exits the competition at the group stage, leaving Renard facing a considerable rebuild of a national team in freefall.
