James Bailey has completed his move to Stockport County, signing his first professional contract with the League One club after Manchester United declined to offer him a deal at the end of last season.

The midfielder joined United from Burnley in 2021 and spent five years at Carrington, making his under-18s debut under Travis Binnion in 2023 at the age of 15 before stepping up to the under-21s in 2025. United confirmed his departure earlier this month alongside fellow academy players Malachi Sharpe and Sonny Aljofree.

Bailey had already been training with Stockport’s academy side during the season just gone, giving the club a close look at the teenager before committing to a two-year deal. Academy director Mike Jeffries said the signing was fully merited.

“James has worked incredibly hard throughout his time in the Academy since joining from Manchester United and fully deserves this opportunity,” Jeffries said. “He has shown a fantastic attitude, a strong commitment to his development, and a willingness to learn every day. Signing a first professional contract is an important milestone, but it’s also the beginning of the next stage of his journey.”

Head of emerging talent Vinil Joseph also backed the move, describing Bailey as a player Stockport had tracked for some time. “He is a tenacious midfielder who combines a strong competitive edge with excellent technical quality, highlighted by a fantastic left foot,” Joseph said. “We believe he possesses the attributes required to thrive in a senior environment.”

Bailey himself expressed his delight on Instagram, writing: “Happy to have signed my first professional contract at Stockport County. New beginnings, happy to get started.” Former United academy colleagues including Chido Obi and Samuel Lusale were among those to send their congratulations.

The move gives Bailey a clear pathway into senior football at a Stockport side competing in the third tier of the English game.
