Jean-Pierre Papin is no longer ruling out permanently stepping away from his role as a coach. At 62, the former Ballon d’Or winner told Ouest-France he is seriously considering “retirement”, a year after his spell in charge of Olympique de Marseille’s reserve team came to an end.

This turning point appears to have been accelerated by a quiet setback. According to Ici Mayenne, Papin had recently positioned himself to succeed Olivier Frapolli, who departed for Grenoble, on the Stade Lavallois bench. Someone from his circle reportedly made multiple contacts with the club’s management to secure an interview. The Laval board ultimately opted for David Vignes, deeming this profile better aligned with their sporting project. Other experienced coaches — Stéphane Le Mignan, Stéphane Moulin and Stéphane Dief — were also reportedly interviewed during the recruitment process.

Faced with this rejection, the former France striker appears to have reassessed his ambitions in technical roles. His spell at Marseille had already been marked by internal tensions, and since his departure, no position has materialized.

“What will I do in the coming months? Retirement! I’ve given what I had to give, now I want to move on to something else,” he said, before adding nuance: “Help at another club besides OM? I don’t know, I’m not closing any doors, but for now I’m focusing on my consultant role.” Remarks that sound less like a half-open door than a gradual farewell to the touchline.
