Referee Felix Zwayer collapses with cramp as USA beat Australia 2-0 at World Cup
German official Felix Zwayer was helped to his feet by players from both sides after cramping late in USA's 2-0 Group D win over Australia in Seattle, with an energy gel rushed onto the pitch by the fourth official.
German referee Felix Zwayer needed assistance from players on both sides after cramping late in USA’s 2-0 victory over Australia at Lumen Field in Seattle, in a striking sideshow to a dominant American Group D performance.
Zwayer, 45, fell to the turf with just a couple of minutes of stoppage time remaining, with USA forward Folarin Balogun and Australia midfielder Aiden O’Neill helping to stretch out his left leg. Fourth official Katia Garcia rushed an energy gel onto the pitch to aid the stricken official, who was able to get back to his feet and see out the remainder of the match.
The incident came moments after Zwayer had issued a flurry of yellow cards at the end of what had been a one-sided contest. He had refereed the full 90-plus minutes before the cramp struck.
Conditions at Lumen Field were a likely factor. The noon local kick-off in Seattle saw temperatures climb to around 26 degrees Celsius with 45 per cent humidity by the closing stages — demanding conditions for players and officials alike.
The match was among those featuring the controversial hydration breaks introduced at this 48-team World Cup, with players permitted to take on additional fluids at the midway point of each half. The breaks have divided opinion, though Zwayer’s late difficulties underlined the physical toll of officiating in such heat.
The result moves the USA to the brink of the knockout stages, with the two points from the win putting them in a strong position in Group D heading into their remaining fixtures.
