Real Madrid are reportedly weighing a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven this summer, with Spurs understood to be holding out for £75m should they receive a formal approach for the Netherlands international.

The Sunday Mirror reported that Madrid are keen to reinforce their defensive options under new manager Jose Mourinho, with Van de Ven identified as a priority target. It is not the first time the 23-year-old has been linked with a departure from north London — Liverpool have previously been mentioned as a potential suitor.

Van de Ven’s representative, Jose Fortes, appeared to leave the door open to such a move when speaking to Spanish publication Marca last year. “Micky also has the quality to play for a big club like Real Madrid someday,” Fortes said. “Besides, Madrid needs a defender with his characteristics.”

The speculation arrives at a moment of significant defensive reshaping at the Santiago Bernabéu. Madrid are said to be on the verge of signing Ibrahima Konaté on a free transfer from Liverpool, and the potential addition of Van de Ven alongside him could accelerate departures from the current squad.

Dean Huijsen, who joined Madrid from Bournemouth in a £50m deal last summer, endured a difficult debut campaign. The defender made 40 appearances in total, earning 24 La Liga starts across the tenures of Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. Raul Asencio is another whose place in the squad could come under pressure, having managed just 23 La Liga outings last season.

Antonio Rüdiger’s situation adds a further layer of complexity. The former Chelsea centre-back’s contract expires at the end of June, though reports suggest he is set to sign a one-year extension. That outcome could, in turn, give Madrid the option of selling him for a fee next summer rather than losing him for free.

For Tottenham, the reports present a dual challenge: resisting interest in one of their most dynamic defenders while potentially navigating a market in which Roberto De Zerbi may look to use any Madrid surplus as leverage in a swap arrangement.
