Real Madrid's presidential election this weekend could determine Fernandes transfer fate
Manchester United's hopes of signing West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer hinge partly on Sunday's Real Madrid presidential election, with frontrunner Florentino Perez reportedly backing a move for the £80m-rated Portugal international if re-elected.
Manchester United’s pursuit of Mateus Fernandes could be shaped by events far from Old Trafford this weekend, as Real Madrid hold their presidential election on Sunday — a vote that may determine whether Los Blancos enter the race for the West Ham midfielder.
Fernandes, 21, is widely regarded as the most coveted player likely to leave West Ham following their relegation from the Premier League. The Portugal international is considered too good for the Championship, making a summer exit all but certain — but the identity of his suitors remains unclear until the Madrid vote is settled.
Incumbent president Florentino Perez, 79, has already confirmed that Jose Mourinho will return to the Bernabeu if he retains the post he has held since 2009. Spanish outlet AS has reported that Mourinho wants Fernandes and that Real are already making behind-the-scenes moves to facilitate a deal — though the club is holding off on any concrete approach until after Sunday’s result.
West Ham value Fernandes at around £80 million, a figure that reflects the quality of the young midfielder. However, with the club navigating a difficult financial position following relegation, rivals may test whether the Hammers will accept less than their stated asking price.
Perez’s challenger for the presidency is Enrique Riquelme, a Spanish energy magnate who has outlined a different transfer vision entirely. Riquelme has spoken publicly about pursuing Erling Haaland and Manchester City teammate Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, should he unseat the incumbent.
“We spoke with Rodri’s agent,” Riquelme told AS. “I know perfectly well that we then have to talk to City. Rodri’s circumstances are different from Haaland’s, but we have to talk to City. We have the utmost respect for the club.”
For United, the calculus is straightforward: a Perez victory keeps Real in contention for Fernandes and raises the prospect of a bidding war, while a Riquelme win could remove Madrid from the equation entirely and potentially leave the field clearer for other clubs. Sunday’s announcement is expected to bring the first real clarity to one of the summer’s most-watched transfer situations.
