Real Madrid's Mourinho return complicates United's pursuit of Mateus Fernandes
Manchester United's bid to sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has grown more complicated after Florentino Perez's re-election as Real Madrid president paved the way for José Mourinho's return — with Los Blancos now reportedly prioritising the 21-year-old as a summer target.
Manchester United’s pursuit of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has hit a significant obstacle after Florentino Perez secured re-election as Real Madrid president on Sunday, clearing the path for José Mourinho to take charge at the Bernabeu and triggering an immediate push for the 21-year-old.
Real Madrid are now reported to be targeting Fernandes as a priority reinforcement this summer, with Mourinho’s imminent arrival accelerating the club’s transfer planning after a barren campaign in Spain. Perez has pledged that marquee signings will follow, and Fernandes is understood to be high on the list.
United had been tracking the Portuguese midfielder as part of a broader summer overhaul under Michael Carrick, but the emergence of Real Madrid as serious rivals complicates matters considerably. The appeal of a move to the Bernabeu is historically difficult for players to resist, and Fernandes himself is expected to have a significant say in his destination.
West Ham have placed an £80 million price tag on Fernandes, though their relegation from the Premier League has weakened their negotiating hand. The Hammers paid just over £40 million to sign him from Southampton last year, meaning they still stand to make a substantial profit even if a bidding war drives the price down.
United’s potential advantage lies in their willingness to outspend rivals, but with Real Madrid now firmly in the picture, the race for Fernandes looks set to run deep into the summer window.
Elsewhere in United’s transfer activity, Carrick is understood to be close to securing Atalanta midfielder Ederson, though that deal has been delayed after the Brazilian was named in his country’s World Cup 2026 squad. The tournament is expected to cause broader hold-ups across United’s summer business as several targets focus on international commitments.
