Real Madrid's £130m summer pledge could complicate Manchester United's midfield rebuild
Florentino Perez is expected to retain the Real Madrid presidency on Sunday, and his reported £130m transfer commitment could trigger a chain of moves that directly affects Manchester United's search for a Casemiro replacement.
Manchester United’s summer transfer plans may hinge partly on decisions made in Madrid this weekend, as Real Madrid’s presidential election on Sunday is set to shape the European market in ways that reach as far as Old Trafford.
Florentino Perez is widely expected to be re-elected, ending a campaign that produced one notable sideshow: rival candidate Enrique Riquelme appeared on Spanish television programme El Hormiguero to claim he would sign Erling Haaland and Rodri for Real if elected. Manchester City responded with a statement insisting there was “no chance” of Haaland leaving, and threatened legal action after Riquelme held up a Real shirt bearing the Norwegian’s name and the No. 9.
The stunt is unlikely to alter the result, and attention will quickly shift to Perez’s own plans. He has already pledged to spend €150 million — approximately £130m — on a single marquee signing, though he has declined to name the target. At that price, an attacking player is the most probable destination for the funds.
For United, the ripple effects are significant across several positions. Aurélien Tchouaméni has been identified as a midfield target at Old Trafford, but Perez has stated publicly that the Frenchman is not for sale. Rodri is another name in circulation: the Manchester City midfielder has declined to rule out a move when asked about his future, and if he were to leave the Etihad, City’s reported interest in Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson — a player they are already understood to be leading the race for — would likely intensify.
Sandro Tonali, currently at Newcastle, is a player both United and City are monitoring. Should Perez move for Rodri, City’s pursuit of Tonali would almost certainly accelerate, adding another layer of competition for United to navigate if they decide to make a formal approach for the Italian.
United have already agreed a deal with Atalanta to sign Ederson, though the Brazilian is not expected to be the direct replacement for Casemiro. The club’s primary objective this summer remains a midfield overhaul, but the transfer window does not open until after a World Cup that is expected to push much of the significant business into the latter stages of the summer.
How the window ultimately unfolds for United remains unclear, but the pattern of recent years suggests that Real Madrid’s spending — wherever it lands — will set the market in motion and force clubs across Europe to react.
