Real Madrid TV resumes referee-analysis videos after narrow Espanyol win

Real Madrid TV has resumed its referee-analysis videos after the club’s 2-1 La Liga victory over Espanyol, according to a Yahoo Sports report, reviving a format that has repeatedly drawn accusations of undue pressure on Spanish match officials.

The channel’s coverage of the Espanyol match focused on decisions it considered too lenient toward the opposition. The return of the videos places Real Madrid TV back at the centre of a dispute that has involved rival clubs, LaLiga, and Spain’s refereeing authorities.

A history of friction

The referee-breakdown format became a recurring flashpoint in 2024. Ahead of a league match at the Bernabéu, Sevilla filed a formal complaint alleging that the videos amounted to a campaign of persecution and harassment against the assigned officials. The Spanish Football Federation subsequently opened an investigation.

Spain’s refereeing-body chief Luis Medina Cantalejo criticised the practice in comments to COPE radio, while Barcelona president Joan Laporta described the videos as shameful and called on the RFEF to act.

The February dispute

Tensions escalated further in February during a run of three La Liga matches in which Real Madrid dropped seven points. Following the Espanyol fixture at that time, the club wrote to both the RFEF and Spain’s Sports Ministry over the decision not to dismiss an Espanyol player. Real Madrid later obtained access to audio recordings of discussions between the on-field referee and VAR.

LaLiga president Javier Tebas accused the club of constructing a narrative of victimhood.

Renewed debate

With Real Madrid TV now back to producing referee breakdowns, the debate over the club’s public criticism of officiating looks set to continue. The channel’s analysis remains a prominent — and contested — feature of Real Madrid’s engagement with refereeing decisions in Spanish football.
