Real Madrid have identified Ruben Dias as a transfer target this summer, with the Manchester City and Portugal centre-back said to have instructed his agent to explore a departure from the Etihad Stadium following Pep Guardiola’s exit from the club.

According to CaughtOffside, Dias — who has spent six years at City — is open to a new challenge and has attracted interest from both Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. The 29-year-old would not be the only City defender on Madrid’s radar: moves have also been made towards a deal for Croatia international Josko Gvardiol.

Madrid’s pursuit of defensive reinforcements this summer has been complicated by a series of missed opportunities. Marc Guehi, Dayot Upamecano, and Nico Schlotterbeck were all considered and passed over, while Ibrahima Konaté is expected to sign a new contract at Liverpool, effectively closing off that avenue.

Dias’s age is likely to shape the terms of any potential deal. At 29, Real Madrid would be unlikely to meet a full market valuation for the defender, preferring instead to negotiate a cut-price arrangement — a pattern consistent with the club’s approach to older signings. That dynamic means Dias would need to apply significant pressure to force a transfer if he wants to secure a move to the Spanish capital before the end of the window.

For City, the prospect of losing both Dias and Gvardiol in the same window would represent a significant reshaping of a defence that has already struggled for consistency over the past two seasons. Dias has been one of the club’s most decorated players since joining from Benfica in 2020, winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup during his time in Manchester.
