Real Madrid revive interest in Konate as Liverpool defender leaves on free transfer
Ibrahima Konate will depart Liverpool as a free agent this summer after contract negotiations broke down, with Real Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Al-Ittihad all weighing moves for the France international centre-back.
Ibrahima Konate will leave Liverpool as a free agent this summer after contract talks failed to produce an agreement, opening up a transfer scramble for the France international centre-back among some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
As recently as April, a renewal at Anfield had appeared close to completion following months of negotiations. Six weeks later, Liverpool have confirmed Konate’s departure at the end of his contract, turning him into one of the most sought-after free agents of the summer window.
Real Madrid back in the picture
Real Madrid had previously distanced themselves from a deal. According to Diario AS, the club communicated to Liverpool last November that they were no longer pursuing Konate, having grown concerned about a significant dip in his form after months of conversations with his representatives. That stance has now changed, with Madrid once again considering a move.
Free transfers have been a cornerstone of Real Madrid’s recruitment strategy over the past six years, and Konate fits that model. The club are planning to sign one or two central defenders this summer, and a player of Konate’s calibre arriving at no transfer cost would align with their approach.
However, Madrid face serious competition. Chelsea and Bayern Munich are both weighing offers for the 25-year-old, and there is reported interest from Serie A clubs as well. Diario AS note that incoming Madrid manager Jose Mourinho — whose appointment is expected to be confirmed within two weeks — will have the final say on whether the club move for Konate.
Saudi interest adds another dimension
Beyond Europe, FootMercato report that Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad are prepared to table a lucrative offer for Konate and consider him a priority target this summer. To land him, they would need to outbid the European clubs circling the defender, who is likely to have no shortage of options as he weighs his next move.
