Real Madrid issued a statement on Friday to put an end to speculation sparked by comments from Javier Pastore, agent of Enzo Fernández. In an official communiqué, the Spanish club affirms it has undertaken “no steps, direct or indirect, to recruit said player” and clarifies it has “no intention of pursuing such an operation”.

It all began when Pastore, a former Paris Saint-Germain player turned agent, publicly declared that “Real Madrid appreciates Enzo and Enzo appreciates Real Madrid”. These words immediately fueled rumors about the future of the Argentine international midfielder, who is under contract with Chelsea.

Far from settling for a simple denial, the Madrid management took care to craft its response carefully. The communiqué expresses “the deepest respect for Enzo Fernández”, described as a “great footballer whose career and talent are widely recognized”, before praising Chelsea, “a club with which it maintains excellent institutional relations”. It is precisely in the name of this respect, Real Madrid insists, that it deems it “necessary to categorically deny unfounded speculation”.

This public correction comes at a time of rebuilding for the merengue club. Appointed manager a few weeks after the end of the 2025-2026 season, José Mourinho is overseeing an ambitious summer project, following two seasons that were virtually devoid of titles — only a FIFA Club World Cup, won in December 2024, features on the club’s recent honors. Several names are circulating to strengthen the squad, but no arrivals have yet been officially confirmed at this stage.
