Manchester United close in on Swansea's Kit Margetson ahead of Liverpool and Brighton
Manchester United are set to sign 19-year-old Welsh goalkeeper Kit Margetson from Swansea City after contract talks between the teenager and the Championship club broke down. United's goalkeeping scout Tony Coton was spotted watching Margetson in March, with Liverpool, Brighton and Crystal Palace also credited with interest.
Manchester United are poised to sign highly-rated teenage goalkeeper Kit Margetson from Swansea City this summer, with the 19-year-old’s contract at the Championship club having expired after negotiations over a renewal collapsed.
Margetson, the son of former England, Wales and Swansea City goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson, stands 6ft 4in tall and is a Wales Under-21 international. He originally joined the Swansea academy at Under-15 level but never made a competitive first-team appearance for the club.
Despite the lack of senior minutes at Swansea, Margetson built a strong case for himself during a loan spell with Cymru Premier side Connah’s Quay Nomads last season. He made 34 appearances, kept 10 clean sheets, and played a central role in the club’s qualification for European competition.
United’s interest was formalised when goalkeeping scout Tony Coton was spotted watching Margetson during a Cymru Premier fixture against The New Saints in March. The club has since moved quickly to secure his signature ahead of reported rival interest from Liverpool, Brighton and Crystal Palace.
Because of Margetson’s age and development history, United will be required to pay Swansea a compensation fee to complete the transfer, though the financial details have not yet been disclosed.
The plan is for Margetson to initially join United’s Under-21 setup, with a loan move to the National League mooted as a way of ensuring he continues to receive regular first-team football rather than remaining in reserve-team football.
